Reading stories to your kids

Now, i love stories. Especially from my mum. She would always tell me one when i couldn’t sleep at night. The best story that i remember is the Red Riding Hood. Her version was always different. When she was awake, she would tell me the original Red Riding Hood story. When she was tired, i might get surprise with Red Riding Hood bringing necklace to her granny or she wasn’t wearing red hoot instead wearing a Sunday hat. Sometimes, Red Riding Hood brush her teeth and sleep in the woods…

It was fun. I didn’t get to listen to the ending as i was already doze off with my mum.

Here i accidentally found a good story from YouTube. Hope you like it too~

There is nothing like a good read

It’s time to get started. Reading must start young as one can never have too little books nor too much fun.

Looking back on the day i started introducing reading material to my son, Lun. He was just about 4month old.
Then, he was very curious and ready for everything. I had him on my lap and a box of tiny books (Thanks to my friend, Yen.) We were crazy flipping. I had to watch out for the greedy bite and reading out loud at the same time. It was fun for both of us.

We had never graduate from those books. Now at 17months, we would still bring out the books to read. By now, i can memorise all the stories. The minute he pick up the book, flipping by himself, I would be able to sing out the story like a song.

Reading filled our spare hours. I wish to nurture him into the habit of reading. Like the way my mother did to me and my brother. Like the inspiring life story ”The pursuit of happyness”.

The most dangerous place in the world is a public library . That was, of course, only if you could read…

Our current collection has grow into a pile where a storage box will no longer able to hold them all. I will now had to retire some of his old books.  The new, Scholastic Time-to-Discover readers, books by the Melvin and Gilda Berger.  These was all bought at MegaKids , top floor of MidValley. A very bargain price. The cheapest, Rm3. These books are great for the beginner reader. There were only 10pages books, with a line sentence per page, staple bind. A great quick reading material.

When i first introduce Lun, he didn’t stop looking. Mostly because at his age, he started to search for his peers. He has no brothers of sisters, the only place he could find his peers is the garden and the study center. It is not enought for him. These books, has loads of kids. Their action and behaviour amaze Lun.

I will try to upload these books cover when i have time.

HarryPotter “Deathly Hallows”

Deathly Hallows

I had finally finished my last chapter of Harry Potter!!~ hurray~

Sorry for being late. I was busy battling You-Know-Who with Harry. As the matter of fact, Hogward was in danger. I just had to be there. The battle ended well, Harry was after all the Unwanted No1. Volt~~ Opps, Ron wouldn’t let us say it out loud, bad luck; anyway, You-Know-Who was exile. They live happily ever after.. blah…

(Wouldn’t want to leak out too much! )
Another good news is that Harry Potter books are back in MPH shelves and they had charge in a lower price. Thanks to Carefour and Tesco. It’s about time someone stood up to poke on them for jutting up the price.

Anyway, when i bought my copy on Monday at Tesco Ampany, there were still a lot on the shelf. I was thinking of getting adult edition cos i thought it might have more wording. To my surprise both are the same. There was a Malay uncle in his 40’s also wanted to buy a copy of Harry Potter. He and i toke both adult and children edition to compare. We found the different was only to it’s cover and the front inlay where there were a Hogward school logo in children edition. Many of adult edition was sold off, left the worn and torn. I bought the children edition instead.

I guess people bought adult version because of the cover. They might be afraid to let other seeing them in kiddish looking novel, or, maybe they were like me- thought both edition has vast different.

I am going to buy all the previous series as i had forgotten them…. and i just had to buy tickets to catch the latest Harry Potter movie with my hubby.( Hope he wouldn’t felt asleep in the cinema~)

Wizard Lun??

Harry Potter book not selling in Malaysia bookstores??

Check it yourself on Malaysiakini and star newspaper .

I was quite shock to find that Harry Potter was selling at RM69.90 at Carefour and Tesco on last Sunday newspaper. I was so sad because I had pre-ordered mine at the local Popular Bookstore. It was at RM109.90, after the discount of 10% it would still be at a very much higher price.

But at that moment, I didn’t thought of rushing to grab those books myself, as people had queue up from 5am on Sat, and i had only knew it on Sunday. Further more, i didn’t think they would sell it that cheap after the launching date, 21July.

When i came to work this Monday morning, my friend shown me news from Malaysiakini, the urge of buying a copy at the nearby Carefour rose up. I called Popular if i can get back my pre-ordered money, and they told me’yes’ plus in cash. I rushed to check at Carefour but found them out of stock. I didn’t gave up, I tried calling Tesco instead, they have tons at Ampang Tesco.

I will grab it on my way home and get back my money from Popular!…

3 Cheers for Tesco~ Sorry, Popular… yours is too expensive lol~

“All she wants is to go to school”

- A reminder on the essential education -

When i first read this article All she wants is to go to school diverted from parentWonder, I felt sad. The poor girl must have felt awful for being isolated from schools. She reminds me of my old time favorite novel, a recollection childhood memory of Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. In her novel - [Totto-chan], she was once a kick out student similar to this girl. Yet, Totto-chan, was far more lucky. Even thought she was a WWII child, there, an unusual school that was teaching combining learning with fun, freedom, and love that accepted her in. And it was from there, taught her to become what she is today- a popular television personality cum the first Asian UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

This is an excellent book for those headmaster that had rejected or being skeptic towards those special need children.

Children are angel, for those special; with love, innovation and patient, they will grow into a great person. We should have some flexibility in our education system. Why, education is for the children, we should also be looking from children’s point of view. What children think education should be.

I hope, from this article, [Totto-chan] and our tiny plead, it will lead us to a new comprehensive education for every types of children.

Love Totto-chan

A picture book on how to end a temper tantrums.

Lately, I’ve bought an interesting picture book for Lun’s bedtime story. It was bought at MPH bookstore at MidValley.

The-Chocolate-covered-cookie

The Chocolate-Covered-Cookie TANTRUM

I find this an interesting and a good reading material for my 16m old son. This book, as per it’s cover title, about a girl who insisted to eat a chocolate covered cookie on the spot where she wanted. Nothing too surprise on the story, but it can influence little reader and enlighten parents who has hot temper children.

The illustration was done not in a normal cartoonish way. It uses color to describe the child’s emotion and the tension at that scenario.

Words are easy and brief. It was just at the nice length where i can narrate the story and act it in the same time. I am very sure this is the right book when i bought it.

On the same night, I read it to Lun. Lun wasn’t too keen to look at the pictures. But I had finished the whole story with him. It was the first night I’d shown him this book. Maybe he was not too keen to read a new book yet. There might be also the reason for the illustration to be too emotional driven. It horrified Lun with the intense feeling in the drawing.

I will try to read it in different way. I might start out with a play and a recorded narration of my voice.

Or

I can redraw another version of my own. It was after all a good story to teach Lun about his temper tantrums.

Choosing a good picture book

Dig books

The last book shopping brings in a few picture books for Lun. All these weren’t a successful reading.
Firstly, i forgotten that Lun was too big for animal picture book cards. The vegetable book cards were boring too.
Chinese nursery books i’d bought was a failure.(Too difficult.) The only book that he read was the book that he had chosen.

This brings me back to the question on How to choose a good picture book.
An article from SinChew newspaper mention that best picture books doesn’t always come in a cute form. In fact, cute books will only mislead them to an unreal, flattering, fantasy world. Worst, when it has blurred their understanding between real and fantasy.
In other word, cute picture books will only under estimate children’s understanding power.

So, what is a good picture book?
