For 4Months - Early sitting stage.

  • Books that will endure wear & tear- board and cloth books are perfect
  • Clear Pictures
  • Familiar subjects & pictures- animals, babies, children, cars, trains, anything a young child will recognize
  • Small books, fun for little hands
  • Touch and feel books- soft and furry, hard and sturdy etc..

Most importantly the act of reading. To read in the most interesting way that catches their attention. This, had to depend on every parent. One doesn’t have to read everything from the book, we can use the pictures to form words and sentences. Babies at this stage doesn’t look at all the words that you’ve pointed to, if you want, you can point at the picture and tell them the meaning. Wordless books with wild imagination is good for them too.

Lun first grip and flip pages at the age of 4Month+. Thanks to Lyn Yen, my friend and ex- colleague. We had a first set of Lun’s own book. It was a set of 12 board books on animals and nursery rhymes. They are just big enough for him to hold on.

Daily, we sat on the floor and flip the books together. Sometimes we just flip the books without reading them. Sometimes he bite the books. Other times, he will just try to hold it on his own. I guess they taste good and feel nice. We had them alone in our collection until i found another book that interest him.

During this period, i had also introduced him to a second language -Japanese. I was a Japanese library member and could get the books easily during lunch break from work. I simply borrowed any big picture books home for him to see.

Both of us were happily flipping books and wondering what does all the language means. ( I wasn’t Japanese literate.)

Tomorrow i’ll be sharing ‘Sitting stage - Standing stage’. Stay tune.
