Comfort Zone for Art + Kids + Parenting

I’m busy creating construction vehicle flash cards.

They are for my dearest son~Lun.
Lun the contractor
Ever since he saw backhoe and dump truck loading dirt at the roadside. He couldn’t get his eyes off any construction vehicles. We have tons of books, range from animals, plants to machinery. He did not have a fix favorite then. He’ll read ( look) at every pages when he likes. Sometimes, he will stick to certain books. His previous favorite was books on father, children on playground, books about our body parts, stories on all sorts of kids at work, animals.

Until one day, we were out for a day trip visiting a few cousins of my. On our second last stop, we had a quick lunch at a coffee shop. Right in front of us, a backhoe loader was loading dirts into the dump truck. It was an opportunity not to miss. I quickly carried my son closer. Well, I guess, I had make it interesting by telling him to observe. Telling him that engineering was like our arms taking objects. We’d also mimic the noise of the machine. What a fun! We watch them until the dump truck depart.

That very night, he replay the whole scenario. Using his limited words and sounds. He became the backhoe loader. I’d join in the fun, and we got carried away. Me as the dump truck.We rumble the whole room with motor sounds and digging our pillows and books.

That was erm… half a year ago, before Chinese New Year. At that time, I thought he was just having fun, will soon be forgotten. I didn’t buy any digger toys or books. We just shown him the machines on Youtube once awhile when he was disturbing out work. I did some simple power point flash cards of vehicles. He love seeing them. We got him concentrate on the flash cards. I did a puppet backhoe loader. A quick one using marker and cut out. He didn’t pay much attention.
He was then,focusing more on the tools.

His interest in construction vehicle arise when we divert his attention to tower crane. We tried to stop his pacifier during the car ride. Now, during his boring time, or when I reach home from work and bedtime story, it’ll only be construction vehicle. He will just carry his books and paper print out to spread them on the floor and start reading them. Even when we do flash cards. He will jump to the spot eager to learn the names. When we flip the books, he will constantly point and ask.
=)

I had to get back to my work, making handmade construction books and flash cards for hungry caterpillar.

Wah, seems lika my “dig-gong” is quite popular. Maybe i should really think of making a few to sell online. {if i have time}

ps: Dig-gong is digger. This is how my son pronounce it.
